ECTOPIC PREGNANCY – A LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants outside the uterine cavity. This is a gynecologic emergency that can cause internal abdominal bleeding and may be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

• Pelvic or genital infections
• Previous ectopic pregnancy
• History of fallopian tube surgery or assisted reproductive techniques

• Missed period accompanied by abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding
• Dizziness, cold sweats, low blood pressure (signs of rupture)

• Medical treatment when diagnosed early
• Surgical intervention if the ectopic mass has ruptured or medical treatment fails
