ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA IN CHILDREN

Otitis media is defined as an infection of the middle ear, commonly occurring in young children. If left untreated, it can lead to hearing loss, meningitis, and brain abscesses.

• Viruses, bacteria
• Nasopharyngitis; adenoids; tonsils
• Cold, humid weather
• Dust and cigarette smoke

• Ear pain, fussy behavior
• Fever
• Ear discharge
• Poor appetite, vomiting

SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY if there is high fever, severe ear pain, or purulent ear discharge.

• Keep the ear dry; do not clean deep into the ear
• Use saline nasal drops
• Consume nutrious diet, drink plenty of water.
• Take medications as prescribed by the doctor

• Keep warm
• Maintain good nasal and throat hygiene
• Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke and dust
