The event marks an important milestone for Hong Ngoc General Hospital in its journey to enhance specialized neonatal care services. This model helps expand access to safe pasteurized donor human milk for preterm infants, low birth weight newborns, and neonates with medical conditions - vulnerable babies requiring specialized care from the very first days of life.
Hong Ngoc General Hospital’s Journey to Establishing a Satellite Human Milk Bank
On May 8, 2026, Hong Ngoc Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital welcomed the Satellite Human Milk Bank Assessment Delegation for an on site survey and evaluation of the hospital’s implementation capacity and operational conditions.
The assessment was attended by Mr. Dinh Anh Tuan, Director General of the Department of Maternal and Child Health, along with department officials and professional representatives from the Central Human Milk Bank at the National Children’s Hospital, the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC Hanoi), and Alive & Thrive.
The Satellite Human Milk Bank Assessment Delegation conducted site visits, surveys, and evaluations of the hospital’s readiness and implementation conditions.
During the working session, the Assessment Delegation conducted a comprehensive evaluation of multiple key areas, including the hospital’s legal compliance and operational capacity; facilities and milk storage equipment; personnel and staff training; professional operating procedures; as well as documentation management, traceability systems, and quality and safety assurance in the collection, storage, dispensing, and use of pasteurized donor human milk.
The Assessment Delegation conducted comprehensive surveys and evaluations across multiple key areas.
According to experts, this is currently one of the most highly specialized models in neonatal care. The Assessment Delegation acknowledged and highly appreciated Hong Ngoc General Hospital’s thorough and well structured preparation throughout the process of establishing the Satellite Human Milk Bank.
The event also reflects the hospital’s long term commitment to developing a maternal and neonatal care system based on safety, quality, and compassionate healthcare standards.
“Breastfeeding Excellence Hospital” Recognition - A Foundation for Establishing a Satellite Human Milk Bank
One of the key prerequisites for establishing a Satellite Human Milk Bank is that the hospital must meet breastfeeding practice standards recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health.
Previously, the Hong Ngoc General Hospital system was recognized as a “Breastfeeding Excellence Hospital” after years of consistently implementing comprehensive breastfeeding support initiatives throughout the hospital.
Hong Ngoc General Hospital Recognized as a “Breastfeeding Excellence Hospital”
Mr. Dinh Anh Tuan, Director General of the Department of Maternal and Child Health, shared: “The ‘Breastfeeding Excellence Hospital’ recognition is one of the most rigorous standards and also a prerequisite for establishing a Satellite Human Milk Bank. This demonstrates Hong Ngoc’s strong commitment to investing in the well being and rights of newborns.”
Mr. Dinh Anh Tuan, Director General of the Department of Maternal and Child Health, delivered remarks and shared professional guidance during the event.
In recent years, Hong Ngoc General Hospital has been among the healthcare institutions strongly committed to promoting breastfeeding support initiatives, achieving notable outcomes such as increased rates of immediate skin to skin contact after birth, early breastfeeding within the first hour of life, implementation of Kangaroo Mother Care for preterm and low birth weight infants, and specialized training programs for doctors and nurses in breastfeeding support.
According to neonatal specialists, for preterm infants and newborns with weakened immunity, breast milk is not only the optimal source of nutrition but also plays an important role in enhancing immunity, supporting recovery, and reducing the risk of complications during the early stages of life. Therefore, expanding access to safe pasteurized donor human milk is of particular importance in neonatal care and treatment.
Expanding Access to Safe Pasteurized Donor Human Milk for Newborns
Officially becoming a Satellite Human Milk Bank enables Hong Ngoc General Hospital to expand access to safe pasteurized donor human milk for newborns, particularly preterm infants, low birth weight babies, neonates with medical conditions, and cases in which mothers are temporarily unable to breastfeed immediately after delivery.
As a Satellite Human Milk Bank under the Central Human Milk Bank at the National Children’s Hospital, Hong Ngoc General Hospital is fully prepared to receive donated breast milk from the community of breastfeeding mothers through a rigorous process, including consultation, donor screening, guidance on milk expression and storage, as well as safe preservation and transportation procedures.
Dr. Vu Manh Dung, MD. MSc - Head of the Neonatology Department at Hong Ngoc Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital, shared insights on the implementation of the Satellite Human Milk Bank model.
In addition to enhancing specialized neonatal care capacity, this model also contributes to Hong Ngoc’s continued development of a more comprehensive and advanced maternal and child healthcare ecosystem. At the same time, it serves as a bridge to strengthen connections within the breastfeeding community, while promoting awareness of breast milk donation and breastfeeding practices to the wider public.
More than a milestone in professional development, the implementation of the Satellite Human Milk Bank also reflects Hong Ngoc General Hospital’s commitment to supporting mothers and newborns, while contributing to the promotion of compassionate values in neonatal care across Vietnam.
