On October 17 and 18, 2026, Hong Ngoc General Hospital will host the symposium “Advances in Hip and Knee Surgery” bringing together 13 experts from 6 countries to share the latest techniques and trends in modern joint surgery.
Advances in robotics, artificial intelligence and minimally invasive techniques are opening up new approaches to joint surgery. Which innovations are reshaping joint replacement worldwide? Can robotic systems, surgical navigation and AI replace the role of the surgeon? These questions will be explored at the symposium, held at Hong Ngoc Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital.
The symposium will bring together 13 experts from Vietnam, Austria, Japan, Germany, India and Taiwan (China). The program will feature 18 presentations across two scientific sessions and two live surgical demonstrations, offering diverse perspectives on global trends in joint surgery and practical experience in managing complex cases across different healthcare systems.
Thirteen experts from six countries will gather at the symposium.
Commenting on the event, Le Quang Huy, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery at Hong Ngoc Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital, said: “The symposium is a forum for updating specialist knowledge, developed in line with the surgical training standards of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England), with a strong emphasis on clinical quality and practical training. Bringing together Vietnamese and international experts, the program combines scientific presentations with live surgical demonstrations, providing opportunities to learn about new techniques, exchange experience and support their application in clinical practice, thereby improving the quality of patient care.”
On October 17, the program will feature two scientific sessions covering primary arthroplasty, joint preservation, revision arthroplasty and revision arthroscopic surgery.
The symposium “Advances in Hip and Knee Surgery.”
The first session will feature nine presentations on primary arthroplasty and arthroscopic surgery, with key updates on minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty, kinematically aligned total knee arthroplasty, robotic systems, AI and joint reconstruction techniques.
Opening the discussion on treatment strategy selection, Prof.Priv.Doz.Dr. Dietmar Krappinger, PhD, MBA, Deputy Director of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Head of Pelvic and Hip Surgery at Innsbruck Medical University, Austria, will introduce a new approach to managing acetabular fractures in his presentation, “THA in Acetabular Fractures.”
Another issue attracting growing professional interest is the role of technology in the operating room. In his presentation, “The Role of AI Robotic Systems in Transforming Knee Arthroplasty: Precision and Beyond” Mr. Jaiman Sharma, MBBS, MS, from Medanta The Medicity in India, will examine the potential of AI and robotic systems in preoperative planning, prosthetic component alignment and the advancement of more precise, personalized surgery.
Beyond arthroplasty, the first session will also explore advances in knee joint preservation and reconstruction through presentations by Christian Koidl, MD, PhD, Leader of the Knee Team at Innsbruck Medical University, Austria, and Assoc. Prof. Chao Ping Chen, MD, PhD, Director of Sports Medicine in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan (China), among others.
Building on strategies to optimize primary procedures, the second scientific session will feature nine presentations examining the challenges of revision arthroplasty and revision arthroscopic surgery. Topics will range from revision hip and knee arthroplasty, bone defect reconstruction and the management of periprosthetic fractures to revision ligament reconstruction and strategies to minimize the risk of graft failure.
In this session, Prof.Priv.Doz.Dr. Dietmar Krappinger, PhD, MBA, will present “Total Hip Revision Arthroplasty in Austria.” Revision hip arthroplasty involves more than removing and replacing a prosthetic joint. Surgeons must also consider bone quality, the extent of bone loss and the ability to establish stable fixation for the new implant, with the aim of achieving outcomes comparable to those of primary surgery.
Addressing these challenges, Mr. Pai Han Wang, MD, from the Department of Joint Reconstruction and the Therapeutic and Research Center of Bone Tumor at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan (China), will present “Bone Defect Reconstruction in Total Hip Arthroplasty: Conditions and Considerations.”
In knee surgery, Prof. Hiranaka Takafumi, MD, PhD, Director of the Joint Surgery Center and Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Takatsuki General Hospital, Japan, will present “Total Knee Revision Arthroplasty in Japan.”
Mr. Phan Ba Hai, MD, PhD, Deputy Head of the Department of Upper Extremity Surgery and Sports Medicine at Viet Duc University Hospital, will discuss strategies for “Minimizing the Risk of Graft Failure After ACL Reconstruction.” These presentations will offer diverse perspectives on managing complex cases following primary surgery.
On the morning of October 18, Hong Ngoc General Hospital will conduct two live surgical demonstrations broadcast directly from the operating room to the conference hall. The procedures will include SuperPATH hip arthroplasty and revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction combined with lateral extra-articular tenodesis.
Both procedures will be performed by the surgical team from Hong Ngoc General Hospital under the technical guidance of experts from Austria and Germany. The demonstrations will allow attending doctors to observe each operative step and discuss potential clinical scenarios directly with the experts, strengthening the practical focus of the program and promoting professional exchange between Vietnamese and international surgeons.
The symposium will bring together leading orthopaedic and trauma surgery experts from Europe and Asia.
Beyond providing updates on advances in joint surgery, the symposium also reflects the organizational and surgical training capabilities of Hong Ngoc General Hospital, which has been recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) as an international surgical training center. By combining in-depth presentations, experience from different healthcare systems and live surgical demonstrations, the symposium is expected to deliver substantial academic value with direct relevance to clinical practice.
