HPV vaccination helps effectively prevent cervical cancer, one of the most serious health threats in women. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide after breast cancer and ranks fourth among all diseases with the highest incidence and mortality rates globally.

What is the HPV vaccine?

The HPV vaccine is designed to prevent cervical cancer, genital warts, and other diseases caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). In addition to cervical cancer, HPV infection is also associated with other malignancies such as squamous cell carcinoma of the anus, vagina, vulva, penis, and certain cancers of the head and neck.

HPV is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, including skin-to-skin and mucosal contact involving the throat, mouth, vagina, penis, or anus of an infected person. Intimate behaviors such as oral sex or genital contact by mouth can also increase the risk of HPV transmission.

Who should get the HPV vaccine?

HPV vaccination is both important and necessary. To achieve the best protection, it is essential to understand the following:

Age group The optimal age for HPV vaccination is from 9 to 26 years, ideally before the onset of sexual activity. For the highest effectiveness, the vaccine should be administered early, preferably between 9 and 14 years of age, when children have not yet been exposed to the HPV virus.

The recommended candidates for HPV vaccination are females between 9 and 26 years of age.

Women planning pregnancy Women who intend to become pregnant should complete all HPV vaccine doses at least one month before conception. If pregnancy occurs during the vaccination schedule, the remaining doses should be postponed until after delivery.

Can women who are sexually active or already infected with HPV still get vaccinated? Yes. Women who have had sexual intercourse or have been infected with certain HPV strains are still advised to receive the vaccine. This is because they may not have been exposed to all HPV types. The vaccine can provide protection against other strains not yet acquired. However, the effectiveness will not be as high as in women who have never had sexual activity and have never been infected with HPV.

Should you get the HPV vaccine?

According to statistics from the HPV Information Centre, every 4 minutes a woman dies from cervical cancer. In Vietnam alone, there are 14 new cases and 7 deaths each day caused by this disease.

Since there is still no specific treatment for HPV, vaccination is considered the most effective and essential method to proactively prevent cervical cancer and other dangerous conditions caused by the virus.

The HPV vaccine is proven to be safe, with no significant side effects. The most common reaction is mild pain at the injection site, which usually resolves within a few days.

Importantly, HPV vaccination is not only recommended for women but can also be given to men to reduce the risk of HPV-related diseases and prevent transmission.

Women are strongly recommended to receive HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer as well as several other HPV-related diseases.

What types of HPV vaccines are available?

In Vietnam, the most widely used HPV vaccines are those developed in the United States for the prevention of cervical cancer, precancerous lesions, dysplasia, genital warts, and other conditions caused by HPV infection.

These vaccines provide protection against HPV types 16 and 18, which are considered the most dangerous strains due to their strong association with cervical, vaginal, and anal cancers. In addition, they also protect against HPV types 6 and 11, which are the primary causes of genital warts.

Vaccination schedule: a total of 3 doses

  • Dose 1: at the time of the first vaccination
  • Dose 2: 2 months after the first dose
  • Dose 3: 4 months after the second dose

How much does HPV vaccination cost?

The cost of HPV vaccination varies depending on the vaccination center and the type of vaccine selected. Even within the same facility, the price may differ between individual doses and package options. Generally, purchasing a package is more economical, and patients also benefit from scheduled reminders for subsequent doses. In many clinics, the vaccine is reserved in advance, ensuring availability at the time of the next injection.

At public hospitals or smaller clinics, the vaccine price is usually lower, but patients may face long waiting times. In contrast, private hospitals often offer higher service quality, shorter waiting times, and attentive care, which explains the higher cost.

Therefore, the exact cost of HPV vaccination cannot be fixed, as it depends on the healthcare facility and the vaccine type chosen.
