Supporting elderly patients with heart disease: Maximizing health insurance benefits and favorable policies

Starting from June 2025, Hong Ngoc General Hospital will launch a gratitude program offering a 20% reduction in cardiovascular intervention costs, while simultaneously applying the maximum coverage under the national health insurance scheme for patients aged 60 and above.

According to the Ministry of Health, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Vietnam, accounting for approximately 200,000 fatalities each year. The majority of these cases occur in individuals over the age of 60, as cardiac function declines with aging and is often compounded by underlying conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.

In recent months, Hong Ngoc General Hospital has observed a rising proportion of elderly patients admitted with severe coronary artery damage. Many of these cases are detected late due to reluctance to seek medical care, concerns about administrative procedures, and financial barriers. As a result, patients often present with advanced disease accompanied by complications such as heart failure and myocardial infarction, making treatment more complex, challenging, and costly.

Starting in June 2025, as part of its commitment to supporting and removing financial barriers for this vulnerable age group, Hong Ngoc General Hospital will introduce a special pricing policy for patients over 60 years of age. The program offers a direct 20% discount on cardiovascular interventions and hospitalization costs (excluding medical supplies), while allowing patients to simultaneously utilize national health insurance and commercial insurance. This flexible approach aims to ease the financial burden for elderly patients in accessing advanced, specialized treatments.

Especially, Hong Ngoc General Hospital has closely collaborated with the Health Insurance Authority so that patients can enjoy the full benefits of health insurance, equivalent to those at public hospitals, without the need for referral. Therefore, patients not only receive the elderly discount mentioned above but also benefit from the maximum reduction according to their own health insurance coverage, helping them feel secure in treatment while easing financial burdens.

In addition, elderly patients receive further support when visiting for outpatient consultations and treatment: a 50% discount on consultation fees, a 30% discount on cardiovascular screening packages, and a 20% discount on diagnostic services such as ultrasound, electrocardiography, laboratory tests, and 2,560-slice coronary CT scans. These benefits make it easier for older adults to undergo regular cardiovascular health check-ups.

Starting in June 2025, Hong Ngoc General Hospital will launch a gratitude program exclusively for patients over 60 years of age.

At Hong Ngoc General Hospital, all cardiovascular interventions are performed under protocols that meet ACHS International standards set by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards, with particular emphasis on establishing a “rapid response team” to effectively manage emergency situations. The hospital frequently admits and treats complex cases such as elderly patients requiring multiple stent placements, drug-coated balloon angioplasty for severe lesions, and coronary interventions in patients at high risk of bleeding. These procedures are carried out through the close collaboration of a team of physicians with over 20 years of experience, supported by advanced equipment including digital subtraction angiography (DSA) systems and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS).

“Our goal is not only to provide financial support but also to expand opportunities for elderly patients to access advanced medical services at the stage of life when they are most vulnerable. By combining health insurance benefits with the hospital’s special pricing policy, patients can significantly reduce their financial burden while still ensuring the highest quality of care,” shared Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cong, MD, MSc, Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiology – Interventional Cardiology, Hong Ngoc General Hospital.

The gratitude policy for elderly patients aged 60 and above has been supporting many cases detected and treated in a timely manner - among them Mr. L.V.T. (64 years old, Hanoi), who had previously undergone placement of three coronary stents and has a long history of hypertension and cervical spine degeneration.

During a visit for cervical spine evaluation, he proactively requested a cardiac check-up after learning about the newly launched gratitude program. The results revealed severe coronary artery stenosis, requiring the placement of two additional stents to restore blood flow to the heart and prevent complications such as heart failure or myocardial infarction.

“I was fortunate to be diagnosed in time. At first, I thought of delaying treatment, but thanks to the support policy, I felt reassured to undergo the intervention right away at Hong Ngoc. My only wish is to recover soon and return to my children and grandchildren,” shared patient T.

The intervention was performed the same day in a sterile catheterization laboratory, ensuring maximum safety. With the 20% discount under the hospital’s special pricing policy and 80% coverage from the national health insurance scheme, his family was able to save nearly 70 million VND in treatment costs.

Mr. T showed significant improvement in his symptoms and was discharged three days after the intervention.

According to Dr. Nguyen Dinh Cong, cardiovascular disease in the elderly often progresses silently and is difficult to detect at an early stage. Many patients are only diagnosed when they already have severe coronary artery stenosis or signs of heart failure, even though they previously had no obvious symptoms. Early screening is the “golden key” for detecting cardiovascular disease in older adults from its initial stages. With timely monitoring and treatment, elderly patients have a much greater chance of maintaining stable health and preventing complications.
