Arrhythmia: A challenge in CT imaging technology

Ensuring high-quality, clear imaging for accurate diagnosis has long been a challenge in patients with arrhythmias, such as tachycardia, irregular heartbeats, or atrial fibrillation. 

The biggest challenge for patients with arrhythmias is the heart’s irregular movement, which often causes palpitations, discomfort, and makes it extremely difficult for them to remain still during a CT scan. With previous generations of CT scanners, doctors often had to use heart rate-lowering medications (beta-blockers) to slow the heart rate to below 70 beats per minute during the CT scan. However, using these medications often made patients uncomfortable, led to long waiting times, or caused side effects that prevented the CT scan from achieving the desired results.

The 2560-slice CT scanner is considered the most advanced CT imaging system available in the world today, featuring the world’s fastest gantry rotation speed of just 0.23 seconds, this CT scanner can capture images of the entire coronary artery system in the blink of a single heartbeat, unaffected by a fast, slow, or irregular heart rate.

Especially noteworthy is that the system does not require ECG gating - an unprecedented advancement compared to previous generations of CT scanners. With its ability to capture the heart in a single heartbeat, the 2560-slice CT technology has completely broken through the limitations of conventional CT imaging in patients with arrhythmias. As a result, patients no longer need to take beta-blockers to slow their heart rate, scan times are significantly reduced, and motion artifacts related to arrhythmias are effectively eliminated. This brings greater comfort to patients, saves time and costs, and minimizes medication-related complications — all while ensuring outstanding image quality.

Especially suitable for patients with arrhythmias and those with complex or multiple cardiovascular conditions, CT imaging remains a valuable tool for health monitoring, though concerns about radiation exposure still persist.

The 2560-slice CT technology, equipped with advanced radiation dose-reduction features, effectively alleviates these concerns by lowering radiation exposure by up to 96% and using up to 70% less contrast agent compared to previous-generation CT systems, ensuring maximum patient safety without compromising image quality. This is especially important for patients who require repeated imaging for ongoing monitoring, as well as for elderly individuals and those with multiple underlying health conditions.

Previous generations of CT scanners had limitations in performing comprehensive myocardial perfusion assessments due to the significantly high radiation dose required for the procedure. The 2560-slice CT technology, with an ultra-low radiation dose of under 5 mSv and rapid rotation speed, enables effective diagnosis of myocardial ischemia, as well as high-resolution monitoring and quantification of coronary atherosclerotic plaques. It also aids in detecting areas of myocardial ischemia or pulmonary infarction, allowing clinicians to develop appropriate interventional strategies.
